A Geographic Information System (GIS) is designed to store, analyze and display geographically represented information. For the Saline County Study, several GIS data sets, or layers, have been collected from various state and federal sources. Where a desired layer (see Program Design and Outcomes within the Saline County Study Proposal) is not available from these sources, or the data is incomplete or inadequate, CARES has developed new GIS layers. The information incorporated into the GIS to date is listed below. CARES has made this information available to the citizens of Saline County through our Internet Map Server (IMS). GIS data sets are usually very large, so be patient with the viewer!
The first section, Geophysical Data, lists the geophysical information for Saline County. Here we have mainly included the physical resources of the county, but have also included several man-made features such as roads or wells.
The next section, Demographic Data, includes information from the 1990 Census. Most categories below are available only at the Block Group level. A Block Group is made of 2 or more Census Blocks, the smallest unit for which 1990 Census data is available. General Population and Housing Unit data are available at the block level, and can be viewed along with the Block Group information.
NOTE: After selecting Map Selected Data, IMS will be launched. In order to make full use of the IMS functionality provided you are encouraged to Click on the help button to show online instructions for the IMS viewer, or view the help now.
County Summary, includes several tables and descriptions of Saline County which will be used within the study.
