LIFE I Alumni Event

The date will be Thursday November 16 with gathering to begin at 5:45 and a dinner feast to be served at Maxine’s in Slater at 6:15. Please go ahead and put this on your calendar to attend.

Carol Pardeck, in our office, is working on the flyer and it will be going out early in September to LIFE I fellows, the steering committee for LIFE I, and presenters. The SCS study group members may join us for dinner and the keynote and then meet in a separate room to do some separate business.

The charge to those attending is $8. LIFE funds will be used for the $50 room fee and for a tip of $1 per person attending. Money is due at the time of registration. Registrations are transferable but not refundable. The group suggested beef and chicken for the meats. Registrations are needed by Monday noon November 13.

LIFE II

Great discussion and planning!

2 classes of LIFE II, 3 sessions for each class.

Theme: Putting Unity in Community - Children, youth and families in Saline County

Teach/review pillars of character through a challenge course activity for each one. Continue to weave in ethics with the fellowship.

It is important to continue the dialogue with the commissioners. Take the class to see them.

Incorporate a National Issues Forum or locally framed issue within the fellowship.

Day 1 Community: From Rescue to Capacity Building (points below not in any order)

  • Citizen participation
  • Saline County Learning Center
  • Trends in Rural MO - Tom Johnson has an excellent presentation The Rural Economy in a New Century. Consider starting the day with this

  • How do we articulate a vision - Saline County as a place for people at all stages of the lifecycle
  • Community pride
  • Children and families with unmet basic human needs in Saline County

Day 2 Youth in Community

  • Kids Count Measures
  • How can we stop exporting our youth?
  • How do young people set goals and expectations?
    • Meet with them and REALLY LISTEN to what they can teach us
    • Young people as a resource - how do we begin to live this?
  • Kretzman/McKnight framework
  • Cinderella Minus the Prince
  • Search Institute data

Day 3 The Economy

  • Linda Dryer is key resource. Might host at One-Stop
  • Work ethic
  • Poverty - Poverty Puzzle National Issues Forum
  • What is a livable wage here?
  • What are the current poverty levels

Other great ideas

Involve LIFE fellows in the Holiday Food Distribution. Work Friday afternoon - distributing food and packing up. The morning volunteers are exhausted by this time.

In LIFE I we attempted to incorporate youth as fellows. This didn’t happen. How do we get youth LIFE fellows. Integrate with the adults OR have a separate Youth LIFE Fellow program???

Margaret and others - Please search for the Search Institute data

Next meeting September 11, 3:30 - 5:30 p.m., Saline County Extension Center

  • Wendy bring issues forum update - framing projects, poverty NIF booklet
  • Update on evaluation of LIFE - Wendy
  • Revisit the question of involving youth in LIFE
  • Last minute details on Nov. 16 Alumni event - LIFE I
  • Complete plans for LIFE II - time to get out flyers and get to marketing
