One of the most unusual sites in Saline County is the
"Buffalo Wallow" located in the southwestern part of the county. The Buffalo
Wallow was a favorite place for bison to dust themselves, possibly because of the minerals
found in the soil. There are some suggestions that the area was also used by Mastodons.
The area has been dug out by thousands of years of use and now is a wetland that naturally
harbors rare species of plants such as the small spike rush which dominates the right side
of the picture.
